Quick answer
The main Ooty tourist places are the Government Botanical Garden, Ooty Lake, the Rose Garden, Doddabetta Peak, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, Pykara, Avalanche, the Coonoor viewpoints and Mudumalai. Most town spots charge ₹20 to ₹50 per adult and open around 9 am to 6 pm, and two full days covers the town plus one long drive. If you are driving up in a non TN-43 vehicle, get the free Nilgiris e-pass from epass.tnega.org before you reach the check post.
Sort these rules out before you drive up
This part catches people out more than any sightseeing mistake, so start here.
Vehicle e-pass. If you are coming in your own car or a taxi that is not registered in the Nilgiris (TN-43 plates), you need the free e-pass from epass.tnega.org. One pass covers the vehicle and everyone in it, two-wheelers included. You enter the registration number, travel dates, phone number, where you are staying and the number of passengers, and you get a QR code. A screenshot on the phone is accepted at the barrier, no printout needed. Apply before you start the climb, signal on the ghat is patchy.
On when it applies, sources disagree. The system came out of a Madras High Court order and was built around the summer rush, broadly April to June, when the district caps entry at about 6,000 vehicles on weekdays and 8,000 on weekends. Several sites now say it is being asked for through the year, and some report it being extended around big events and the year-end holidays. It is free and takes five minutes, so just apply whatever your dates are. Exempt: TN-43 vehicles, government buses, ambulances, and anyone arriving by train, the toy train included.
Green tax is a separate thing, paid in cash at the check post. Roughly ₹20 to ₹30 for a two-wheeler, ₹40 to ₹50 for a hatchback, ₹50 to ₹80 for an SUV, ₹80 to ₹150 for a tempo traveller or small bus. Keep ₹200 in cash, UPI at the barriers is unreliable. The posts are at Kallar and Kunjapanai on the Mettupalayam and Coimbatore side, Masinagudi and Mel Gudalur on the Mysore and Wayanad side, and Geddai on the Kotagiri road.
Plastic. Single-use plastic is banned across the district and plastic water bottles under 5 litres are not allowed past the entry points. Checking happens at Burliar, Kunjapanai, Kakkanallah, Nadugani, Geddai and a few others. Carry steel bottles, there are RO refill points at the main tourist spots.
Bandipur night closure. Coming from Mysore or Bangalore, the NH766 stretch through Bandipur is shut to traffic from 9 pm to 6 am, and to two-wheelers from 6 pm. Time your drive to clear it in daylight or you will be sitting at the gate till morning.
Ooty tourist places, in the order most people cover them
Distances below are from the Ooty bus stand and Charing Cross area. Fees change when the Horticulture Department revises them, so where sites disagree I have given the range, confirm at the counter.
1. Government Botanical Garden
The standard first stop, about 2 km from the bus stand, so a ten-fifteen minute drive unless the Charing Cross junction is jammed. 55 acres, laid out in 1848, terraced lawns, a fossil tree trunk, a glass house and an Italian section. Entry is ₹30 to ₹50 per adult and ₹20 to ₹30 for children depending on the current revision, still camera ₹50, video camera ₹100 and up. Reported timings run from 7 am or 8 am to 6:30 pm, all days, no weekly closure.
Budget 60 to 90 minutes for a normal walk. It is uphill in parts and the paths are long, so if you have elderly parents along, do the lower terraces and skip the top end.
Important for May travellers: the Ooty Flower Show is held here, and the district administration has announced 18 to 28 May 2026 at the Government Botanical Garden. A few travel sites list mid-May dates instead, so confirm on nilgiris.nic.in closer to your trip. During the show the garden is packed, traffic diversions come into force and parking moves to designated lots, so go on a weekday morning if you can.
2. Ooty Lake and the Boat House
About 1 km from the bus stand. Lake entry is ₹20 per person for Indians and boating is charged on top. Gates are open roughly 9 am to 6 pm, boating counters close earlier, around 5:30 pm.
Boating rates at the Tamil Nadu boat house, as listed for 2026:
- Pedal boat, 2-seater, 30 minutes: around ₹350
- Pedal boat, 4-seater, 30 minutes: around ₹450
- Row boat with oarsman: about ₹205 to ₹245 plus ₹45 for the oarsman
- Motor boats by size: roughly ₹800 to ₹950 for 8-seater, ₹950 to ₹1,150 for 10-seater, ₹1,350 to ₹1,650 for 15-seater
A refundable security deposit equal to the boat charge is collected and returned when you hand the boat back, so keep the receipt. For a family of eight to ten the motor boat works out cheaper per head than two pedal boats. The lake is not clean and nobody comes here for the water, families come for the boat ride, the horse rides and the snack stalls. Half an hour to 45 minutes is enough.
3. Government Rose Garden
2 km from the centre, on Elk Hill. Around 9 am to 6 pm, entry about ₹40 per adult, camera ₹50. It is the largest rose collection in the country, roughly 20,000 plants and close to 2,800 varieties, on terraces facing the town.
The flowering is best March to June and again September to November, which means late October and November trips still see plenty. In January there is much less in bloom, still fine for a 30 to 40 minute walk but don't make a special trip. Club it with the Botanical Garden on the same half day, they are about 2 km apart.
4. Doddabetta Peak
Highest point in the Nilgiris at 2,637 m, about 9 km from town on the Kotagiri road, 25 to 30 minutes by car. Entry is ₹10 to ₹30 per adult depending on the source, children about half, and there is a telescope house at the top that charges separately. Timings are listed anywhere from 7 am to 8:30 am opening, closing 6 pm.
Go as early as you can. By late morning the cloud usually sits on the peak and you see nothing, and on weekends the last kilometre of road backs up badly with cars waiting for parking. If the sky is clear when you wake up, change your plan and do Doddabetta first.
5. Nilgiri Mountain Railway, the toy train
UNESCO listed, metre gauge, 46 km of rack railway between Mettupalayam and Ooty. Two ways to do it.
The full ride: the uphill train leaves Mettupalayam around 7:10 am and reaches Ooty by about 11:55 am, nearly five hours. The downhill train leaves Ooty at 2 pm and is at Mettupalayam by about 5:30 pm. Second class fares run roughly ₹295 to ₹450 and first class roughly ₹600 to ₹1,100 depending on the stretch and quota.
The short version: Ooty to Coonoor shuttles run through the day and take about an hour each way. This is what most families with small kids should take, the full climb is long and the seats are hard.
Southern Railway's Salem division has run an extra peak-season service on the Mettupalayam line, advertised for 27 March to 5 July 2026, uphill on Fridays and Sundays and downhill on Saturdays and Mondays, at special fares of about ₹965 second class and ₹1,470 first class. Booking is on IRCTC and reservations open 60 days before the journey date. Seats go within minutes in April to June, so set a reminder for the opening day. Tip: toy train passengers are exempt from the vehicle e-pass, which is one more reason to leave the car at Mettupalayam if you are only coming up for two days.
6. Tea factory, tea museum and the tea estates
On the Doddabetta road about 5 km out, so you pass it coming back from the peak. Open around 9 am to 6:30 pm, entry ₹20 to ₹30. You get a walkthrough of rolling, fermenting and drying with a short commentary, then a tasting and a shop. Twenty-five minutes inside, then the hard sell on tea and chocolate packets starts, so decide your budget before you walk into the shop.
The estate viewpoints along the same road charge nothing to ₹20 and are open from morning to about 6 pm. Late afternoon, 4 to 6 pm, is when the light is best for photos.
7. Thread Garden
Opposite Ooty Lake, so you do it with the boating. Around 9:30 am to 6 pm, ₹30 per adult and ₹20 per child. It is flowers and plants made entirely of thread, no machines used, done over years by a team. Thirty to 45 minutes. Children either love it or ask to leave in ten minutes.
8. St Stephen's Church
About 1 km from Charing Cross on the Mysore road, free entry, roughly 9 am to 5 pm. One of the oldest churches in the Nilgiris, wooden beams reportedly brought from Tipu Sultan's palace at Srirangapatna, old graves at the back. Twenty to 30 minutes, and it is on the way out of town if you are heading to Pykara.
9. Wenlock Downs and 9th Mile Shooting Point
14 to 15 km out on the Pykara road, about 30 minutes. Entry is ₹20 to ₹30 per adult, around ₹10 for children, camera ₹30, and horse rides start near ₹100 and are negotiable. Timings are roughly 8 or 9 am to 6 pm.
It is open grassland that has been used in a long list of Tamil and Hindi film shoots, which is the whole reason for the name and the crowd. There is nothing to do except walk around, take photos and ride a horse, so twenty-thirty minutes is plenty. Combine it with Pykara, they are on the same road.
10. Pykara Falls and Pykara Lake
The falls are about 19 to 23 km from Ooty, 45 minutes to an hour on the Mysore road. Entry to the falls is free, there is a parking charge and a battery car at about ₹20 per person one way from the parking to the viewpoint. Open roughly 8:30 am to 5 pm.
Pykara Lake and the boat house are a separate stop about 2.5 km further along the same road, people mix the two up and then complain they missed the boating. Rates listed for 2026: 2-seater speed boat for 10 minutes around ₹785, 8-seater motor boat for 20 minutes around ₹770 to ₹950, 10-seater around ₹860 to ₹1,150, 15-seater around ₹1,210 to ₹1,650.
Water volume is the thing to understand. July to September and again in October to November after the northeast monsoon, the falls are full. By March to May there is much less water and some people feel cheated. The walkway down to the lower viewpoint gets slippery in the wet months, wear shoes with grip, people do slip there.
11. Avalanche
About 22 to 28 km from Ooty depending on the route, allow an hour each way. There is no entry fee for the lake area but private vehicles are not allowed past the forest check post, and the last few kilometres have to be done in a Forest Department vehicle. The shared bus is about ₹200 per person and a jeep works out to roughly ₹2,000. The ride takes close to two hours including stops. Reported timings are 9 or 9:30 am to 3 pm for the last vehicle out, some sources say 5 pm.
Important: vehicle numbers are limited and in season they finish by mid-morning. Reach the check post by 9 am, do not plan Avalanche as an afternoon add-on. There is no food worth the name beyond the trout farm area, carry water and something to eat. This is also a Reserve Forest, so no plastic, no loud music, no getting off where you like.
12. Emerald Lake
Same direction as Avalanche, around 5 km apart, so do both on one trip. It is a reservoir surrounded by tea slopes and farmland, no entry fee and nothing built up around it. Good for a quiet stop and birdwatching, bad if you are expecting shops or toilets.
13. Sim's Park, Coonoor
Coonoor is 19 km from Ooty, 45 minutes to an hour by road, and Sim's Park is the main garden there. Open 7 am or 8:30 am to 6:30 pm, all days. Entry is reported between ₹30 and ₹75 per adult and ₹15 to ₹40 for children, so carry a bit more than you expect. It is built on a slope in a sort of Japanese layout with a small lake at the bottom, around 1,000 plant species, and the annual fruit show is held here in May. An hour is enough.
14. Dolphin's Nose and Lamb's Rock
Both on the same road out of Coonoor, do them together in one circuit. Lamb's Rock is about 7 km from Coonoor and Dolphin's Nose about 12 km, which makes them roughly 26 to 32 km from Ooty. Entry is about ₹40 per adult and ₹20 per child at each, timings roughly 9 am to 5:30 or 6 pm.
Go in the morning. Cloud fills these two valleys by midday for most of the year and then you have paid to look at white. Monkeys here are aggressive about food, keep packets inside the bag. Both have steps and uneven rock near the edge with limited railing, so not ideal for anyone with knee trouble.
15. Mudumalai Tiger Reserve and Theppakadu
Theppakadu is about 40 to 45 km from Ooty by the Kalhatty route through Masinagudi, 36 hairpin bends, and allow 1.5 hours going down and 2 hours coming back up. That road closes overnight and has restrictions on heavy vehicles and buses, so big groups usually go the longer way via Gudalur. If you are nervous about tight bends, take the Gudalur road.
Safari slots are morning 6:30 am to 10 am and afternoon 2 pm to 5 pm. Entry is about ₹30 per Indian adult and the Forest Department van or bus safari is around ₹150 per person for roughly an hour. Jeep safaris arranged through resorts run ₹2,000 to ₹3,000 per jeep shared between six to eight people, and rates vary. Private cars and taxis are not allowed inside the core area at all. Booking is mostly on the spot at the reception centre at Theppakadu and online booking is not always available, so reach early, specially on weekends and holidays.
The elephant camp at Theppakadu has public feeding at about 8:45 am to 9:15 am and 5:45 pm to 6:15 pm. If you only want the elephants and not a safari, time your drive for one of those windows.
16. Mukurthi National Park
For people who actually want to walk. You cannot buy a ticket and stroll in, entry is by Forest Department permit through organised guided treks only, booked through the Nilgiris forest division or the Tamil Nadu trekking portal. Entry is around ₹25 per Indian and a guide is about ₹200 per group of up to five. No independent trekking, camping or driving inside.
Apply at least a few weeks ahead, permits are limited and the office does not issue them at short notice in season.
17. Tribal Research Centre museum, Muthorai Palada
About 10 km from town. Open 10 am to 1 pm and 2 pm to 5 pm, closed on second Saturdays and national holidays. Entry is free or a token ₹5 for Indians. Displays on the Toda, Kota, Irula, Kurumba and Badaga communities, with Toda hut models, tools and ornaments. An hour at most, and it is the one stop that explains who actually lives in these hills. TNSTC buses run on this route if you don't have a car.
How to reach Ooty
By air. Coimbatore (CJB) is the nearest airport, 85 to 88 km away, 3 to 3.5 hours by road via Mettupalayam and Coonoor on NH181. Pre-paid taxis and app cabs run from the airport, and a one-way private cab is usually the cheapest way for a family of four. Ola and Uber work in Coimbatore but are patchy inside Ooty, where you will mostly use local taxis with fixed point-to-point rates.
By train. Mettupalayam (MTP) is the railhead for the toy train, 40 to 51 km from Ooty. The Nilgiri Express from Chennai connects into the morning uphill toy train, which is the classic way to arrive. If you want a faster train, come to Coimbatore Junction and drive up.
By road. Bangalore is about 260 to 290 km, 7 to 8 hours via Mysore, Gundlupet and Bandipur. Mysore is roughly 125 km, 4 hours. Coimbatore is about 85 km, 3 hours. TNSTC and KSRTC buses run to Ooty from Coimbatore, Mysore, Bangalore and Chennai, and bus and train passengers do not need the e-pass.
Two route notes. The Kallar to Coonoor ghat has continuous hairpin bends, so anyone who gets carsick should sit in front and skip the heavy breakfast. The Bandipur stretch is shut 9 pm to 6 am.
Best time to visit
November to February is dry, cold and clear, roughly 5°C to 20°C, dropping to near freezing at night in December and January, with frost in the high areas. Mornings are the best time of day for viewpoints. Carry proper woollens, a fleece is not enough in January.
March to June has the best weather for sightseeing, about 15°C to 25°C, and also the worst crowds and the highest hotel rates. This is when the e-pass cap, the flower show in May and the long queues happen. Book stays and toy train seats well in advance.
July to September is southwest monsoon, 10°C to 18°C, heavy fog, landslip risk on the ghats and waterfalls at full flow. Cheapest hotel rates of the year if you are ok with wet days.
October to November gets northeast monsoon showers, usually afternoon spells rather than all-day rain. Good value, and Pykara still has water.
For trips in the coming months, which is what most readers are planning now, November to mid-December is the sweet spot: clear mornings, manageable crowds on weekdays, and no cap pressure on vehicle entry. Christmas and New Year week is the exception, the town fills up and hotels charge peak rates.
A 2-day plan that works
Day 1, town and the peak. Leave your hotel by 7:30 am and go straight to Doddabetta before the cloud. Come down via the tea factory and museum. Botanical Garden next, around 10:30 am, 90 minutes. Lunch in town. Afternoon is the Rose Garden, then Ooty Lake and Thread Garden together, boating by 4:30 pm at the latest. If you are walking around Charing Cross in the evening, St Stephen's Church fits in before 5 pm.
Day 2, the Pykara and Avalanche side. Pick one direction, not both. Either leave at 8 am for Wenlock Downs, Pykara Falls and Pykara Lake, back by 3 pm, or be at the Avalanche forest check post by 9 am for the department vehicle and add Emerald Lake on the way back. Avalanche is the better day if the weather is clear and you don't mind a long drive on narrow roads.
If you have a third day, do Coonoor: the Ooty to Coonoor toy train in the morning, Sim's Park, then Lamb's Rock and Dolphin's Nose by taxi before midday cloud, back by evening. A fourth day goes to Mudumalai, leaving Ooty by 5:30 am for the morning safari slot, or staying one night at Masinagudi instead of doing the ghat twice in a day.
What to carry
- Steel or copper water bottles, plastic under 5 litres will be stopped at the check post
- Real woollens for November to February, including a cap, and warm clothes for kids at night
- Shoes with grip, the Pykara walkway, the Coonoor viewpoints and garden terraces are slippery when wet
- ₹500 to ₹1,000 in cash for green tax, parking, small counters and horse rides, UPI fails in several of these spots
- Power bank, and offline maps, because Jio and Airtel both drop out on the Avalanche and Masinagudi roads
- Motion sickness tablets for the ghat climb if anyone in the group is prone to it
- Any regular medicines, pharmacies are in town only, not near the lakes
Where to stay
Staying near Charing Cross or the lake keeps you walking distance from the gardens and the market, which matters because Ooty's inner roads crawl on weekends. Fern Hill and the Coonoor road have the quieter, larger properties, and you will need a vehicle from there. Coonoor as a base is cheaper and much calmer, and still within an hour of most Ooty sights, so couples and older travellers often prefer it. Masinagudi suits anyone whose main interest is Mudumalai. Through April to June and the last week of December, book 6 to 8 weeks ahead, rates double and the cheap places go first.
We plan group trips and customised holidays, though Ooty is not one of the routes we run ourselves, so if you want something planned end to end look at our MyTripLama packages.
Frequently asked questions
Which Ooty tourist places can I cover in 2 days?
Day one: Doddabetta Peak early, then the tea factory, Botanical Garden, Rose Garden, Ooty Lake and Thread Garden. Day two: pick one long drive, either Wenlock Downs with Pykara Falls and Lake, or Avalanche with Emerald Lake. Trying to fit both drives into one day does not work.
Do I need an e-pass to visit Ooty in 2026?
If your vehicle is not registered in the Nilgiris (TN-43), yes, apply free at epass.tnega.org and keep the QR code screenshot. It was introduced for the April to June rush with daily vehicle caps, but several sources say it is now being asked for year round, so apply regardless of your dates. Train and government bus passengers are exempt.
What is the entry fee for Ooty Botanical Garden and Rose Garden?
Botanical Garden is listed between ₹30 and ₹50 per adult with ₹20 to ₹30 for children, plus ₹50 for a still camera and ₹100 or more for video. Rose Garden is about ₹40 per adult with a ₹50 camera charge. The Horticulture Department revises these, so confirm at the counter.
Is the Ooty toy train worth it and how do I book?
The Mettupalayam to Ooty climb takes close to five hours and is the better ride, the Ooty to Coonoor shuttle takes about an hour and suits families with small kids. Book on IRCTC when reservations open 60 days before the journey, second class is roughly ₹295 to ₹450 and first class ₹600 to ₹1,100. Peak season special trains cost more, around ₹965 and ₹1,470.
What is the best month to visit Ooty?
November to February for clear, cold weather, March to June for the best sightseeing conditions but heavy crowds and vehicle caps. Avoid July to September unless you want waterfalls at full flow and don't mind fog and wet roads.
Can I take my own car to Avalanche Lake?
No, private vehicles stop at the forest check post and the last stretch is done in a Forest Department bus at about ₹200 per person or a jeep at around ₹2,000. Vehicle numbers are limited and they fill up by mid-morning, so reach by 9 am.
How far is Mudumalai from Ooty and can I do a day trip?
Theppakadu is about 40 to 45 km via the Kalhatty road and 36 hairpin bends, 1.5 hours down and up to 2 hours back up. A day trip works if you leave Ooty by 5:30 am for the 6:30 am safari slot, otherwise stay a night at Masinagudi. Safari tickets are mostly sold on the spot at the Theppakadu reception centre.
Should I stay in Ooty or Coonoor?
Ooty near Charing Cross or the lake if you want to walk to the gardens and market, Coonoor if you want lower rates, less traffic and a quieter base within an hour of most sights. Masinagudi only if Mudumalai is your main reason for the trip.
